Emmanuel Community House, Inc.
Emmanuel Community Center
Emmanuel Community House, Inc is a nonprofit 501(c) 3 tax exempt organization which
provides after-school programming to inner-city youth in addition to senior & family programs,
housing development, community development and volunteer services. Emmanuel’s target
area covers 6 - 8 Mile Roads; Woodward to I-75.
Karen L. Washington serves as Emmanuel’s Executive Director and has personally witnessed
more than 18 generations of youth assisted by the organization. Washington took the position,
with her office initially settled within the historic Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The services
quickly outgrew the facility and commercial property across the street was purchased as office
space. The center stemmed from a vision that the parishioners of Emmanuel Church
developed, with the leadership of Father Robert Willoughby.
In 2004, Emmanuel completed the construction of 9- Single Family ranch styled homes, which
were sold to first time home buyers. As a result, the reconstruction of Montana and Savannah
began. S&S Builders of Southfield, MI reinvested 20 Single Family homes into the area
surrounding Crossroads Village.
The vision for 2011 is to partner with more corporation, and organizations to further the work of
faith-based outreach ministry in the city of Detroit.
The driving force of Emmanuel is the families they serve each day.
